Description

Cosy Cottage with beautiful views. This charming, detached, stone holiday cottage boasts amazing views over the Derbyshire countryside and nestles in the hamlet of Little Bolehill, on the outskirts of the lovely market town of Wirksworth. It has been renovated by the owner to include all the mod cons but still has the charm of the original cottage. Outside there is an enclosed courtyard with a lockable gate and to the front of the cottage, there is a pretty little garden with seating area to make the most of the wonderful views. Wirksworth was once an important lead mining town and is steeped in history. St Mary’s Church has a famous Saxon sarcophagus and there is an array of interesting architecture, independent shops, pubs and restaurants and an art deco cinema. On Tuesday’s there is a small market and every month (Saturday) there is a farmers’ market. The centre of Wirksworth is 10 mins walk down a public footpath or five minutes drive from the cottage.
Enjoy exploring the ancient “jitties” and courtyards of the Puzzle Gardens, along with the Heritage Centre and the delightful surrounding countryside, including nearby Carsington Water, Black Rocks and the High Peak Trail. Rock climbing and cycling can be enjoyed here at every level and there’s superb walking all around. Well Dressing is unique to Derbyshire, and Wirksworth combines this tradition with a lively carnival and annual arts festival, which attracts international performers of every kind. Beautiful Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are within easy reach, as well as Matlock Bath, Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, Abraham’s Heights and Gulliver’s Kingdom. The Derwent Valley World Heritage Site in Cromford (Richard Arkwright’s Mills) is just two miles away.

Downriver lies Matlock Bath. This historic village is set in a steep-sided limestone gorge with whitewashed cottages perched along the hill side. Nearer the river a more `touristy' atmosphere prevails with its many attractions from museums and cafes to souvenir shops. On the western side of the gorge is the Heights of Abraham which is popular with visitors due to its superb views and amenities, including restaurant, picnic area and caf. A cable car can be taken to the top from Matlock Bath railway station.

Between Matlock and Matlock Bath is High Tor, a broad limestone cliff rising some 400 feet above the River Derwent. Around High Tor there is a network of paths suitable for exploring the area and from which to experience the spectacular views. In the grounds below there are refreshment facilities, picnic areas, children's playground, wooded walks and two caverns.

Carsington Water is ahuge draw for outdoor enthusiastswith outdoor activities including walking, cycling, fly fishing, birdwatching, sailing, canoeing, and windsurfing all available. Situated in Asbourne and within easy reach of the Peak Districtit has a sailing club next door to the Visitor Centre and cycle hire. Fly fishing is available from the bank and from boats that can be hired from the Fishing Lodge. There is plentiful car parking and for young children there is a children's playground.

To the south is the market town of Wirksworth, which is one of the oldest towns in the area, with a central marketplace in which markets have been held since the reign of Edward I.
