Description

Only a 5-minute walk across meadows from the peaceful and sheltered farmstead setting of this cottage leads to the shops and village inns of picturesque Edale (a mile by road) and the start of the Pennine Way and its trail over 30,000 acres of National Trust owned High Peak. Converted from an old stone barn and very comfortably fitted and equipped, this spacious cottage enjoys use of a paddock garden with a stream, and is adjacent to the owners’ farmhouse home.
This is excellent walking country, with a glorious landscape of heather clad moors and wind sculptured stones. Pony trekking locally. Cycle hire available 2 miles. Good fly fishing is available at Ladybower Reservoir, 8 miles away. Within 4 miles are the village of Hope (with good shops and pubs) and Castleton, with its Blue John Caverns, Peveril Castle and bustling cafes, inns, restaurants and craft shops. Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Bakewell and Buxton are all within 15 miles and Alton Towers is about 1 hour’s drive. The local railway station (0.5 miles) enables return rides from Hope Valley walking, or easy visits to Magna and Meadowhall in Sheffield, and the Science Museum in Manchester.

Pennine Court (E1669) comfortably accommodates up to 15 guests but if you have a larger party or are celebrating a special occasion then Kinder Court (E1671) next door can be interconnected to Pennine Court at both ground and first floor levels with additional rooms available to sleep at total of 24 guests. Please see individual property descriptions for further details. Please note: Kinder Court (E1671) cannot be booked as a stand alone property.

About the local area

Located within The Peak District National Park, this area includes Winnatt's Pass and Mam Tor in the west, the Edale Valley where the famous Pennine Way starts, Ladybower Reservoir where they filmed `The Dambusters' and south following the River Derwent to Hathersage.

The Hope Valley has some of the prettiest villages in the Peak District including Bamford close to Ladybower and Derwent Reservoirs, Hope at the junction of the River Noe and Peakshole Water where the Edale Valley joins the Hope Valley and Castleton, famous for Peveril Castle and surrounded by Mam Tor, Winnats Gorge and Cave Dale.

Castleton is one of the most popular and pretty villages in the Peak District. Set in the midst of beautiful scenery it has lovely walks and a ruined Norman castle; Peveril Castle first built in 1080. Around the village square are some fine old cottages, pubs and the church. The natural caverns of Cave Dale and Peak Dale are reached from the top of the main square and several shops in the village sell `Blue John' (a local Fluorspar), the ideal holiday souvenir.

Visitors can leave the car behind and travel the length of the Hope Valley by train; The Hope Valley scenic railway stops at Grindleford, Hathersage, Bamford, Hope and Edale villages.

Like much of Peak District this area is popular with walkers, of particular note is Mam Tor, with its hill fort and wonderful views in all directions and of course the Pennine Way.
