Description

Kinder Cottage can be found in the High Peak village of Hayfield on the edge of the Peak District National Park, adjoining a traditional public house where you can expect a warm and friendly welcome. Comfortably furnished throughout, both bedrooms benefit from en-suite facilities and you can even opt to have a full English breakfast provided in the breakfast room next door (by direct arrangement with the owner, charges apply).

Hayfield has a wonderfully rural setting and is probably best known as the birthplace of Arthur Lowe, otherwise known as bumbling Captain Mainwaring in "Dad’s Army". More recently it’s also recognisable as the setting for BBC1’s blockbuster drama series, "The Village", starring John Simm. Hayfield is a popular destination for walkers due to its close proximity to Kinder Scout, which arguably provides the most famous, challenging and rewarding walks in the Peak District National Park. Less challenging is the Sett Valley Trail, a flat 2-mile greenway route for cyclists, horse riders and walkers that links Hayfield to the town of New Mills. Hayfield has a range of pubs, cafes, shops and restaurants and a whole host of other Peak District towns and villages are easily accessible. The famous market town of Chapel-en-le-Frith can be reached in around 10 minutes. Lyme Park, Edale, the caves of Castleton and the spa town of Buxton are around 20 minutes away, and the hugely popular market town of Bakewell, the Chatsworth Estate and Haddon Hall are around 40 minutes. Shop ¾ mile, pub 20 yards and restaurant ¼ mile.

About the local area

Nestling in the foothills of the Pennines, with Kinder Scout to the south and Bleaklow to the northeast, Glossop is situated in the north west of the county; handily placed for exploring the High Peak, with its rugged moorland, varied wildlife and excellent walks

The original old town, `Old Glossop', has some fine 17th and 18th century cottages centred on a market square and cross. Glossop Brook, which flows through the old town, is perfect for a leisurely stroll.

In the town centre itself there are many shops, an indoor and outdoor market and with two parks there's plenty of open green space to enjoy; Manor Park with 60 acres of woodland, lakes and gardens, including a miniature railway and children's playground and Howard's Park which is smaller but equally pleasant.

To the north is the Longdendale valley, with five reservoirs and the Longdendale trail, a walking and cycle route which follows this picturesque valley and forms part of the Trans-Pennine Trail. The former mill villages of Padfield and Hadfield which overlook the valley and Tintwistle are all good bases from which to explore the area.

Overlooked by Kinder Scout to the south are the villages of Hayfield and Little Hayfield which are popular with walkers and mountain bikers.
