Elton is a charming small village set high on the White Peak limestone plateau and surrounded by the remains of centuries of lead mining, revealed in the numerous bumps and hollows in its fields. The village has become a popular centre for walking in the White Peak. Elton was the last village in Derbyshire to retain a rural firebox, provided by the Derbyshire Fire Service because of the remoteness of its situation. The firebox contained a standpipe, hose reels, a stirrup pump and a hand-operated siren which called out the village volunteers. The firebox was discontinued in 1987.
