Anne, Charlotte and Emily Bronte wrote some of the most famous novels in the English language. Today, the moors and hills that inspired The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights draw many seeking to explore the dramatic landscape of Bronte Country and the South Pennine hills.

This is perfect walking country, whether you prefer a planned route to see the sights or a slow wander in the hope of discovering unexpected treasures.

You can visit the ruined farmhouse of Top Withens, on which Emily based the Earnshaw home of Wuthering Heights and the Bronte Waterfalls, a place the sisters visited often for peace, reflection and creative inspiration.

The moors are also home to a number of fascinating towns and villages. Haworth is a favourite and the house in which the Bronte family lived is now the Bronte Parsonage Museum.

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway runs through Bronte country from bustling Keighley to the village of Oxenhope. There's a stop at Haworth and another at Oakworth, the station used for filming the classic movie, The Railway Children.

Bronte Country is much more than a day-trip and there's no better way to steep yourself in this ancient land of mystery and romance than to stay in a solid moorland cottage.

Whether you prefer a town location or a more remote and rural spot, it's great to know that a day on the moors is guaranteed to end in a hot meal, a relaxing bath and a comfy bed.
