The original old town, ‘Old Glossop’, has some fine 17th and 18th century cottages centred on a market square and cross. Glossop Brook, which flows through the old town, is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
In the town centre itself there are many shops, an indoor and outdoor market and with two parks there’s plenty of open green space to enjoy; Manor Park with 60 acres of woodland, lakes and gardens, including a miniature railway and children’s playground and Howard’s Park which is smaller but equally pleasant.
To the north is the Longdendale valley, with five reservoirs and the Longdendale trail, a walking and cycle route which follows this picturesque valley and forms part of the Trans-Pennine Trail. The former mill villages of Padfield and Hadfield which overlook the valley and Tintwistle are all good bases from which to explore the area.
Overlooked by Kinder Scout to the south are the villages of Hayfield and Little Hayfield which are popular with walkers and mountain bikers.
