Description
This newly built log cabin offers a secluded and comfortable stay in the quaint and peaceful Derbyshire village of Mappleton, on the very fringe of the Peak District National Park.
The cabin is set well back from the road within its own enclosed garden (in the owner’s grounds), with off road parking and has the benefit of being located only a short drive from the interesting market town of Ashbourne.
Mappleton is a charming, secluded brick built village which sits almost astride the River Dove with a pretty one-arch stone-bridge spanning the river with attractive views all around.  The Okeover Arms pub serving home cooked meals is a mere 5 minute stroll away as is the local sub-post office and the Church of St Mary’s.  Prince Charles has visited the Okeover Arms in Mappleton several times and participated in local equestrian events. St Mary’s, the present tiny domed church was designed & built by James Gibbs, a former pupil of Sir Christopher Wren who designed St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and his influence can be plainly seen here in the Mappleton edifice! There are some interesting almshouses which date back to 1727, and nearby is Callow Hall, a splendid Victorian country house and restaurant set in 44 acres of gardens, meadow and woodland.  A scheduled bus service connects Mappleton with Ashbourne and Buxton.
Take one of the many walks from the cabin along the riverbank to Dovedale, just a couple of miles upstream, to the famous stepping stones across the River Dove or climb well-known local landmark of Thorpe Cloud, rewarding yourself with a locally made ice cream or a warm cuppa. Cycle “The Tissington Trail”, a scenic & traffic free route along the old Ashbourne to Buxton railway. Cycle hire and snack stall at the start of the trail. For the more adventurous, fly a paraglider/ hang-glider with the local flying school on the nearby hillsides. Or take the family to Alton Towers, only 20 minutes or so away.
Ashbourne is a picturesque small market town situated at the southern tip of the Peak District, famous amongst other things for its annual Shrovetide football match. The town combines a medieval street pattern and historic buildings with a wealth of high quality shops devoted to crafts, fashion boutiques and antiques. The town attracts many visitors who come to enjoy a town which has changed little in appearance since the 18th century. The cobbled market place, hidden alleys and yards are a delight to explore, and the wide and elegant Church Street is enjoyed by many antique lovers.  Ashbourne is well served with local amenities; there are 3 supermarkets, leisure centre & swimming pool, large park and newly refurbished playground.
A truly stunning location with an abundance of places to visit. Mappleton makes an ideal base for visiting the numerous attractions which this area of the Peak District has to offer, with Dovedale on the doorstep, Carsington Water, and within a short drive the delights of Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall, Matlock Bath – and many of the natural wonders of the Peak District, all of which are readily accessible.
